The 1990s redefined sports motorcycling, not once but twice. In 1992, Honda delivered the genius of the FireBlade and it was hard to imagine what another manufacturer would have to do to top it. However, top it Yamaha did with the 1998 YZF-R1. The Honda’s glorious five-year reign came to a sudden and dramatic end as Yamaha’s new litre bike – 998cc to the Honda’s 919cc – became the machine everyone wanted. Clever engineering convened in the R1, combining radical design with tried-and-tested technology to take sportsbike design to a whole new level.
