Ben Meakins looks at the Bente 24 project, which is developing an affordable and fun small boat designed to encourage young people to go sailing again

One of the most intriguing small boats for years hit the water in Germany just before Easter. Conceived over a bottle of wine just 10 months ago by sailing writer Stephan Boden and designer Alexander Vrolijk, the Bente 24 has been designed from the start with the aim to get young people interested in sailing and cruising. Projected to cost from r25,000 (around £18,100), the Bente 24 was designed to address three bullet points: to be innovative, reasonably-priced and sexy. The prototype took 10 months from idea to launch – not bad going for a project with many novel and innovative storage and design ideas.
