Hot moulding is a process not unique to boats or indeed to the UK: firms in the US and Canada also specialised in the technique, perfected for both aircraft parts and later for boat manufacture. In Fairey’s case, a male mould made from 4in timbers provided the pattern to take layers of 2.5mm x 150mm agba, each strip bearing its own unique number to form the hull shape. The strips were run through a machine which applied adhesive to one side, the strip being pinned to its allocated place on the mould. In this way the skin layer jigsaw was built up.
