After nearly 30 years the original solid aluminium stanchions on Ammos, my 30ft Discovery 3000 in Greece, had literally worn out – the guard wires had cut well into the metal. If not given attention It was clear that eventually they’d be dangerously weakened. I’d tried to reduce wear by using plastic tubing over the wire in way of the stanchions, but however hard I tried it never seemed to stay in the right place. An easy solution might have been wire sleeved in plastic over its full length – but this can hide potentially dangerous defects in the wire and is banned on racing boats and I was looking for a long-term solution that would require minimal maintenance.
