I looked at some old Sabre 27 brochures to check the price history of the design, which is shown in Diagram 1. In 1970 a new Sabre with good sail-away equipment would have cost a little more than £4,000 (including an allowance for sprayhood and roller-furling headsail, which have become ubiquitous since that date). By 1989, when production was trickling to a halt, the price had rocketed to £34,000, due to rapid inflation and the introduction of VAT. Second-hand values were dragged upwards by the new-build prices, peaking at around £12,000 for early boats before gradually declining to around a current £7,000 for a boat in fairly good condition. Anyone who bought new in 1970, and sold later, should have made a nominal profit! However, for buyers of second-hand boats…
