Red diesel as visual aid

I have sailed my whole life and currently own Mapuleni a Westerly Discus. I like many will be sad when red diesel is finally removed from marinas for boat owners – as this seems to be where it’s going shortly. Pricing obviously pays a big part in that, but there is another use for the diesel being dyed which occurred to me suddenly this winter. I’d noticed a small amount of red in my bilge water towards the end of the winter and initially put this down to doing a fuel filter change and losing some fuel into the bilges in the process. Just prior to relaunch I ensured the bilges were clean and dried to ensure I could spot any water ingress on launch. Once launched I checked again…
