MAMIKO WATANABE Being Guided by the Light JOJO RECORDS Mamiko Watanabe est née en 1980 à Fukuoka au Japon. Dès l’âge de quatre ans, elle étudie le piano à l’école Yamaha. Les dons remarquables dont elle fait preuve l’amènent à gagner une bourse lui permettant de rejoindre à 19 ans le prestigieux Berklee College of Music à Boston. C’est ici son cinquième album. En compagnie de deux « pointures » des studios new-yorkais, le contrebassiste Santi Debriano et le batteur Billy Hart, elle rend hommage avec grâce et intensité à Jimmy Rowles, donnant une interprétation superlative de The Peacocks, à McCoy Tyner, dont la main gauche l’a manifestement inspirée, avec Island Birdie, et à Tadd Dameron, qui fut un brillant arrangeur au point que l’on oublie souvent le pianiste qu’il…
