A la fin du XIXe siecle, des pianistes noirs tels que Scott Joplin, Tom Turpin, Artie Matthews ou James Scott composent des morceaux ou figure le terme « rag ». Scott Joplin, maître du style, en a composé plus d’une cinquantaine. Depuis, les pianistes continuent de s’y frotter, la main gauche y étant souvent superbement sollicitée. Joplin avait prévenu : « Le ragtime ne doit pas être joué vite. » Pourtant trop souvent, sans doute pour briller, les interpretes le précipitent, le tirant parfois vers le piano bastringue.…
