Sooner or later, in any discussion of programming languages, someone’s bound to mention HTML. But HTML isn’t a programming language: it doesn’t contain instructions for the computer to follow. It’s designed solely to describe the structure of text, images and other content. Actually, that’s not quite right. HTML can include suggestions for the appearance and layout of page elements, but that’s really the domain of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). This isn’t a programming language either, but a standard format for specifying things such as fonts, colours and the locations of images and boxes – and how they move if the window grows or shrinks.
