Quest over for Meta?

Although VR headsets still feel like an emerging product, it’s easy to overlook quite how many units Meta has already shipped. It’s sold more than 20 million units worldwide – which, for context, roughly matches the sales of the Xbox Series X/S games consoles. Although that might sound like a success story, it’s not doing much for Meta’s bottom line. Quite the opposite, in fact. Since acquiring Oculus in 2014, Meta has pumped billions of dollars into Reality Labs, the division of the company responsible for its spatial computing technology. According to CNBC, the business unit has reported losses of more than $45bn (£35bn) since 2020 alone, when the company began reporting its Reality Labs figures separately.
