Ignore the hype around the Pi 500, says Jon Honeyball, and enjoy the hypermiling instead

It’s called hypermiling in the motoring world: squeezing the most distance you possibly can from the minimum amount of fuel. This can be done as a personal challenge – my 12-year-old Audi A3 typically manages 50mpg on a decent run, so I was rather proud when I eked out 100mpg – but this pales against the true masters of the craft. Most famously, VW drove the XL1 100km on a single litre of diesel, which works out at 280mpg. And it managed this, albeit in a somewhat pricey and very limited production run car, over a decade ago.
