You may expect me to deliver a league table of VoIP applications at this point, but I’m not going to break it to you gently: I have no such thing, because VoIP is neither the problem nor the solution for this issue. If anything, it’s the broader programmability of VoIP telephony that allows malicious operators to masquerade behind apparently domestic numbers, facilitating the most distressing forms of scamming. It’s SIP, not VoIP, that’s used in internet telephony. Session Initiation Protocol is one of those annoyingly early protocols that nobody seems able to improve on. The reality is that the successful modern telephony-substitute apps don’t use the old protocols. Battling with SIP transformations in firewall rules has defeated many a phone upgrade project, while WhatsApp, Skype, Google Chat and even Facebook…
