If you’re wondering why phone calls are still so difficult in 2025, Steve – grand master of the VoIP upgrade project – has some answers

Years before the pandemic so dramatically entered our lives, I was running two projects concerned with handling voice traffic. And they couldn’t have been more different. In one case, creating a complete, parallel, enterprise-wide network just for the allegedly more modern, cost-saving, VoIP-based phones; in another, a wholesale conversion to computer-based telephony, with headphones and software replacing handsets and separate technology. These dichotomies caught me on the hop. I had a modern nerd’s attitude to voice, one that only revealed itself when I came to confront my own prejudices during the design process. Customer A wanted ultimate reliability; Customer B was happy with the reliability level it already had with its LAN and couldn’t justify duplicating it “just for phone calls”. My belief was that telephony was on its way…
