HP AI COMPANION APP LEADS THE WAY FOR LOCAL AI… OR DOES IT?

One of the defining characteristics of HP’s new OmniBook range is that it includes an NPU powerful enough to support Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs initiative. And HP doesn’t care whether that’s AMD’s Ryzen AI, Intel’s AI Boost or the NPU built into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X range: it simply needs to meet the 40 TOPS threshold set by Microsoft. On top of Microsoft’s own tools – Recall, Paint’s Cocreator, Live Captions and Windows Studio Effects in video calls – HP is shipping its own AI Companion. Anyone can download this app from the Windows Store, but it will only work on HP laptops that include an NPU meeting the 40 TOPS threshold (I tried running it on the Dell XPS 13 overleaf, but no dice).
