It’s almost impossible to talk about platform emulation without talking about Apple, a company that has used emulator technology not once but three times in its history to pull off major platform moves. The most recent, of course, was with the launch of its own-brand M-series processors, based on a licensed implementation of the Arm architecture. The new design offered better performance and power consumption than the Intel chips the company had previously been using – but since the Intel architecture had been the status quo for the previous 15 years, when the M1 came along in 2020 it was incompatible with almost every Mac application in existence.
