How good are AI age estimates?

We asked both Yoti and VerifyMy if we could test their facial age estimation systems. To be clear, this is far from a scientific test of the systems, more of an anecdotal assessment. We tested with three different people: my almost 14-year-old daughter, my 19-year-old daughter and me, a 46-year-old man. All of us were tested using the webcam on a MacBook Pro. When it came to guessing the correct age, Yoti’s system delivered variable results. It claimed the near 14-year-old was under 13, that my 19-year-old daughter was between 16 and 18 and that I was between 39 and 47, meaning only one of us was placed in the correct age band.
