If there’s a more confused market than that for videoconferencing devices, I haven’t seen or heard of it. A year ago Kensington showered me with little boxes containing USB-connected cameras, for plug-and-play, work-from-home activities – all on what I think of as businesslike, working-day applications.
By that I mean the hardware emphasises all-day high-resolution video. Most of these little boxes have stereo microphones, too, though they can be delivered by an innocuous aperture somewhere on the casing. These desktop cameras are only a couple of hundred quid at the most. The strange thing is that they are comprehensively out-performed by an average smartphone camera.
