LIVING WITH QUALCOMM CHIPS

Nine months ago, Microsoft tore down the silicon fence it had been sitting on by announcing that Copilot+ PCs would launch exclusively on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. At the time, these were the only processors that supported the 40 TOPS minimum criterion required to take advantage of the promised AI skills. This move marked an inflexion point in Microsoft and Qualcomm’s long-running partnership to adapt Windows for the Arm architecture. On one side, Qualcomm is working hard with software developers to create Arm-native versions of their Windows apps. On the other, it’s collaborating with Microsoft on its Prism emulation software. To quote Microsoft: “[Prism is] a software simulator, just-in-time compiling blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions with optimisations to improve performance of the emitted Arm64 code.” Prism is continuing to…
