WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T Some overlanders I've met spend a substantial percentage of their vehicle's total value on recovery equipment (and carry enough of it to significantly increase the vehicle's GVW). Others buy a surplus folding entrenching tool, toss it behind the seat and call it good. Who's right? Neither one, of course. While an entrenching tool—plus patience and sweat— will get you out of a surprising array of stuck situations, you can make life a lot easier with a few upgrades. On the other hand, if you've added enough weight to your vehicle to make getting stuck in the first place more likely—and to make getting unstuck more difficult—are you really ahead?
