Having stopped at a butcher shop earlier in the day, we parked the Land Cruiser in the shade of a palm grove to rest for the night. Over a small fire, vegetables and what appeared to be meatballs simmered in a mélange of spices, and the aroma of cumin drifted through camp. I asked Mohamed what he was preparing. “Moroccan special food!” After presenting me with a roasted goat head a week earlier, his reply left me questioning what delicacy I would be politely shoving down my gullet. He chopped the morsels in quarters and slid a few on my plate over a layer of couscous. “Eat… make you strong,” he said as he raised his fist and forearm in some type of phallic gesture. Meaty balls… make you strong……
