“WACKY” DEER TACTICS
CALLING / AUGUST 1949 This first feature on deer calls in OL tells the tale of an experienced hunter who traveled to Alaska for Sitka blacktails. The author initially thought he was the butt of a joke, but he soon discovered the locals used deer calls with great success. The call looked a bit like a harmonica and sounded simliar to “a lost lamb bleating for its mother”—but they admited they didn’t know what sound it was supposed to replicate. In the end, the author and his buddy called in two bucks and dropped both of them. The story garnered so much reader interest that an advice column on using commercial calls appeared in the October 1949 issue. So while calls were available in the late ’40s, they were still news…
