Until recently, conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya’s name would have been little known among UK opera lovers. But over the past year especially, through her collaborations with ENO – first with Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs and most recent with Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle – she has shown herself to be a serious artist with a vital voice. Jessica Duchen meets her for this month’s cover story, where Yankovskaya speaks so honestly and candidly about her experiences as a young musician, leader of Chicago Opera Theater, founding the Refugee Orchestra Project and as a woman conductor.
