What is it about the human voice as it sings that we find so moving? It can be the work that is being sung, or a moving performance; at other times it’s a sense of nostalgia – a song that pulls us back to another time.
Perhaps my most vivid childhood memories include the voice in some form or other: aged six singing my younger sister to sleep with my father; aged eight sitting cross-legged on the living room floor humming along to my parents record player; aged 10 belting camp songs with 200 other children; aged 13 singing Allegri’s Miserere into the depths of a 76-metre cathedral nave. The voice carried me through most moments of personal growth, and so unsurprisingly, and unsparingly has made its way to the epicentre…
