The 258 m Shot

It was a miserable day in the beautiful Klaarstroom district located close to Prince Albert in the Western Cape. Along with consistent light rain, the wind was howling. Game movement was non-existent, and my hopes of a second successful hunting day seemed increasingly slim. But … It was my favorite type of hunt, a ‘voorsit jag’ as they call it, and my spirits were high. Unfortunately, it was not my favourite type of weather.

To make matters worse, I had hunted the same area the previous day and conditions were spectacular. Cold, but with a warming African sun dissipating all the world’s worries as it shined upon my face. Determined, I pressed on. Early that stormy morning I was dropped off at the same strategic location as the day before, again with very specific tactical instructions on which shooting directions were safe. Typical ‘voorsit’ procedure. After my deployment I methodically settled in, blending into the landscape while creating a stable shooting position so as to not be easily seen by the game while, contradictorily, still being able to see the game easily – a ‘voorsit’ art form.
