THE BISHOP SOLD

Bill McAlpine’s immaculate 1906 Fowler D2 10 ton steam roller No. 10714 The Bishop (named after the Bishop of Hurst) was a very famous engine. Bill McAlpine sold the engine to Brian Richmond-Dodd at Ascot, who in June 1987 sold it to Peter Haining and John Beale who then drove it back to East Sussex. The first day they got to Betchworth having had an overheated big end bearing, and the second day they parked in Jonathan Vartan’s driveway at Wych Cross! It was one of those journey’s and the longest this engine had taken on its own in many decades. Peter and John roaded the engine around for a number of years.
