THE decision by Cronulla fullback Valentine Holmes to seek an immediate release from his multi-million dollar contract to try his luck in the NFL came as a bolt from the blue for the Sharks in November. The 23-year-old had enjoyed a spectacular season with the Sharks, backing himself to cement the club’s fullback position, setting a new club record for tries in a season and starring at representative level for Queensland and Australia. Despite having numerous high-ranking representative team-mates, Holmes had developed into the Sharks’ most influential performer. His loss leaves a huge hole in the team and sends coach Shane Flanagan back to the drawing board in the search for a fullback.
