CONSIDERING the state the Sea Eagles were in at the end of 2018 after a salary cap mess that left them unable to make a serious push into the player market and with the lowest-placed finish in the club’s history – Des Hasler’s achievement in dragging the club back into the finals rates as one of the finest achievements of his coaching career. There was always a nucleus of talent, centred on the Trbojevic brothers and Daly Cherry-Evans, however a lack of depth in the Sea Eagles’ roster was expected to undermine any resurgence. But under Hasler’s guidance, the coach who steered the club to premiership success in 2008 and 2011 re-established selfbelief among his players and they re-emerged as a force in the competition in 2019.
