Missed chances in year of upheaval

IN some respects, it was remarkable that the Sharks qualified for the finals at all in 2019. Five times they scored more tries than their opposition but lost; three times they fielded line-ups that were more experienced than their opponents by over 1,000 NRL games and lost. Seven games (against the Broncos they scored more tries and were significantly more experienced) that they should have won but they let slip. Another seven wins would have seen them push Melbourne for the minor premiership, secure a home qualifying final and give themselves a double shot at another title. Those failures have led to much soul-searching in the off-season and have undoubtedly caused first-season coach John Morris sleepless nights.
