Scots hold struggling Samoa

SAMOA did just enough to qualify for the quarter-finals after salvaging a draw with Scotland in their final pool match in Cairns. Disappointing in their games against New Zealand and Tonga, the Samoan team were in danger of departing without a win before rallying from a 14-6 half-time deficit to draw level midway through the second half. Knowing that a draw was enough to see them progress to the finals on points differential, they played risk-free football until the final siren and dispensed with all-out efforts to win the game. The Scots entered the clash under a cloud after conceding a half-century of points in both previous games and having three players sent home for disciplinary reasons, including captain Danny Brough.
