Irish make their own luck in dominant win

WHILE Italy suffered an 11th-hour setback through the withdrawal of experienced fiveeighth Terry Campese with a calf injury, Ireland were expected to suffer greater discomfort in the oppressive heat and humidity of Cairns. Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees when the match kicked off at 2pm and the humidity pushed towards 70 per cent – levels that were expected to drain the Irish team’s energy. Only two members of the 17-man Irish outfit were accustomed to Australian conditions, while Italy’s squad was comprised predominantly of Australian players – and four of the team played for local Queensland Intrust Super Cup outfit the Northern Pride. But all of that counted for nothing when Ireland executed a game plan of superb control and discipline to stun the Italians in the first upset of the 2017…
