Young stars crow for Roosters

THE Sydney Roosters left the troubles of 2016 behind them to claim the first piece of silverware available in the new season when they walked away with the Auckland Nines trophy and prizemoney worth $370,000. The Roosters shaded Penrith in a closely fought final, but they had little-known winger Bernard Lewis to thank after he scored two crucial tries. The 19-year-old from Badu Island in the Torres Strait played in the Roosters’ Holden Cup-winning team in 2016 and ensured the Roosters qualified for the Nines final with a last-ditch try in the semi-final against Melbourne and another in the final which extended the Roosters’ lead to 10-0.
