An air of uncertainty hung oven over the future of the All Stars event when the 2016 clash kicked off at Suncorp Stadium. A rash of withdrawals and the lukewarm support of NRL clubs had prompted NRL head of football Todd Greenberg to declare the annual event would be subject to review and faced the prospect of being scrubbed from future schedules. Those fears subsided after a high-quality game which was supported by a vocal Brisbane crowd of 37,339 and a national television audience of 817,000 (a seven per cent increase on 2015). The buy-in by participating players was an important factor for a fixture that had grown in significance since its introduction.
