A promising start ends in the cellar

ONLY two teams have been lumbered with the wooden spoon after accumulating 20 competition points – and they are both Newcastle teams. It is the coldest of comforts for the Knights to know they do wooden spoons well, but the facts don’t lie: In 2005 and 2015 Newcastle finished with more competition points than any wooden-spooners in history. The story of the 2005 spoon was bizarre enough. Without Andrew Johns for the early period of the season the Knights slumped to 13 losses from their first 13 games before they embarked on an incredible winning run during the second half of the season.
