New-look Broncos buck the weight of expectation

SIGNS that a rare achievement was brewing at the Broncos became apparent in June when they tackled themselves to a standstill to deny the Storm at Melbourne’s AAMI Park. The defensive effort that afternoon ranked among the finest in the club’s history. As the second half played out, there was a growing sense the Storm were slowly suffocating their prey, having trapped the Broncos in-goal on 11 occasions. Defending a two-point lead for the final 30 minutes of the game, the Broncos spent much of it on their own line and by full-time they had recorded a mind-numbing tally of 445 tackles, including 150 of them inside their own 20-metre zone.
