Aston Martin’s One-77 is legendary for numerous reasons. The 220mph top speed and launch price of £1.1m (good luck finding one for that sort of money now) are in the public domain, but the destination of the 77 cars built is certainly not. Today your chances of encountering one are remote. Grant Macdonald was allowed about an hour with one up-close in his new role as ‘Silversmith to Aston Martin’ – and, actually, over-familiarity might have been a bad idea. ‘The thing for us was to get inside the DNA of Aston Martin without our work being too automotive,’ he says, enigmatically. ‘They didn’t want us to be too literal.
