Robert De La Riviere was 17 when he attended his first 24-hour race at Le Mans. It was 1926, and the competitors were indomitable heroes, exposed in their open cars so everyone could see the gritty determination etched on their faces.
Most spectators, of course, return to their desk jobs on Monday morning and forget about Le Mans for another year.
