APART FROM WATCHING the hands of the classroom clock crawl round the face as though mired in treacle, I was never one for paying much attention at school. Cars were always the obsession, and racing cars in particular. Of those it was Jaguar that made my heart beat fastest. Back in the 1980s, Tom Walkinshaw and his world-beating TWR XJ-Ss were the poster cars on my bedroom wall but, as a keen student of all things four-wheeled, it was tales of Lofty England’s illustrious Competition Department and its succession of sleek, swift and hugely successful racing cars that really captured my imagination. So imagine if you will the powerful mix of emotions triggered when my hazy memories of those distant days are pulled into sharp focus on the grid at Donington…
