CAMPBELL’S SUNBEAM was the first car to reach 150mph. The Napier Railton, which joined the Sunbeam at Pendine Sands, was the first to average 150mph for 24 hours – and although it achieved that at Bonneville, it has an odd Pendine heritage. ‘It was filmed here for Pandora & The Flying Dutchman,’ we’re reminded by Brooklands Museum director Allan Winn, who has brought the Napier Railton along as the support act for the day. He laughs when somebody comments that this 1951 film, starring James Mason and Ava Gardner, isn’t perhaps the greatest work of our time – but we agree that it’s worth seeing for the footage of the Napier Railton at speed (supposedly 300mph!) on the beach.
