FOLLOWING YEARS of foreign domination during the early and mid-50s, Charlie and John Cooper’s team won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1959 and then blitzed the opposition in 1960 with a new car. It was the beginning of a largely English-speaking hegemony. Phil Hill was World Champion for Ferrari in 1961, his namesake Graham Hill (BRM) in 1962, Jim Clark (Lotus) in 1963, John Surtees (Ferrari) in 1964, Clark and Lotus again in 1965, Jack Brabham in 1966 – his third title with his own car, followed by team mate Denny Hulme in 1967, Graham Hill (Lotus) in 1968 and Jackie Stewart for Matra in 1969.
