WHEN PRESENTED with the entirety of the inventory at Vintage & Prestige cars in Essex, it is easy to become fixated on the many grand Rolls-Royces and Bentleys for sale. Look past all that fancy metal, though, and you’ll spot a more modest machine that is, in its own way, just as impressive. The little Jowett 8hp shown above might not measure up to the aforementioned cars in most respects, but on a hot, punishing transcontinental trip it would likely wipe the floor with its larger, more refined roommates. Built in 1920, it shares its DNA – and, most unusually for the time, a pair of horizontally opposed pistons – with the 7hp Jowetts that in 1925 redefined the general public’s idea of what could be accomplished in a car.
