GIVEN THE reverence with which we treat old racing cars these days, it is at once horrifying and hilarious to hear stories like that of this Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6 Le Mans Torpedo Sport, a factory entry and the third-placed finisher in the 1925 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was manhandled around La Sarthe by Henry Stalter and Edouard Brisson, hot on the heels of another B3-6 driven by Gérard de Courcelles and André Rossignol, and only the Sunbeam of Jean Chassagne and Sammy Davis prevented a famous Lorraine-Dietrich one-two. (A trio of B3-6s swept the podium in 1926.) There was no easy retirement for chassis 122892 following its success, however: it was raced until 1935, and then, astonishingly, turned into a harvester by a resourceful French farmer.
