VINDICATED BY HISTORY RM Sotheby’s, London, UK 7 September It must be reassuring for today’s frustrated car stylists to know that even back in the Swinging Sixties the engineers tended to get their way. When the split-window Corvette appeared for 1963 it was hailed as a masterpiece of design. Sure, that rear window compromised visibility a little, but it really was the cherry on top of the cake, a flourish that elevated the ’Vette into the realms of high style. A year later, predictably, it was gone, thanks to stroppy chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov.
