WHEN I STARTED this series, I thought the supply of great subjects would be a simple matter – a er all, there are so many great corners on so many tracks that the feature would almost write itself. A year or so on though, I found myself leafing through the OED in search of a new definition of ‘great’, only to find it occupies nearly half a column. Of the many explanations on offer, ‘worthy of consideration’ seemed a bit limp, while ‘imposing’ was not really appropriate, so it was ‘important’ that emerged as the most relevant.
You wouldn’t call Luffield at Silverstone ‘great’ but, since few claim to have found an optimum route to navigate it, it is definitely worthy of consideration and thus important. But if corner greatness needed…
