THE TITLE of this slender soback is apposite, as the urbane Fitch packed more into his 95 years than seems possible. Evans, who has written several well-received works on 1950s and ’60s road racing, knew Fitch well and it shows. Fitch’s race record is already well documented, not least his Sebring 12 Hours victory and success as a works Mercedes-Benz driver, but his wartime exploits are largely unsung. His relationship with the Kennedy clan is also described here, and you really get a feeling for what Fitch was like in person. On the flipside, the layout lacks style and one or two typos have crept in, but don’t let that put you off. It’s well worth a read and reasonable value, too.…
