Raymond Mays’ magnificent obsession

DO LOT approach this book expecting a warts-and-all biography. It isn’t anything of the sort. Instead, it mostly comprises correspondence between the ERA and BRM legend and the author, who was only13 years old when he first wrote to Mays in 1952. There are also personal letters from the likes of Alfred Owen, Tony Rudd and Ken Richardson, which add further intimacy. While some fascinating nuggets are buried here, much of the text consists of race-by-race summaries with artwork by the author. You don’t really learn a lot about Mays’ personality, and you certainly won’t read about his more notorious extra-curricular activities, but it’s a diverting time-whiler.…
