JUST ADD LIGHTNESS, that’s what Colin Chapman always said. With the new Evora 400, Lotus has done exactly that. Not that the new car is exactly a sylph at 1395kg, but as the fastest roadgoing Lotus in history it does need some substance around its 400bhp, 3.5-litre, supercharged, Toyota-derived V6. So, how new is the Evora 400? Two-thirds new, says Lotus, compared with the outgoing Evora S, also supercharged but 50bhp less potent. It’s a very thorough going-over. Jean-Marc Gales, Lotus CEO since last year and the architect of Citroën’s DS brand extension before that while at LSA, says that he and the Lotus engineers took an Evora S completely to pieces and went through every component, weighing it and costing it and seeing how it could be improved.
