Classic dragsters wake-up sleepy rural England

10-12 JULY Santa Pod, Northants, UK THAT CELEBRATION OF WRONGNESS, madness and all things loud and big-block – Dragstalgia – was held at Santa Lod over the weekend of 10-12 July. As the name implies, this was an event for the old guard of the sport: classic machines, be they in ultra-narrow slingshot form, caricatured Funny Cars or simply Superstock hot rods on steroids. Quarter-mile times started at very respectable and shot up to astounding. The Wild Bunch class contained most people’s idea of a classic dragster: elongated single-seater machines with Ford or Chevy V8s shoehorned between their spindly chassis rails. Drivers were equally cramped in the slingshots’ original narrow-shouldered 1960s and ’70s tubs. A nice touch was how teams had co-ordinated car and team colours – like a jousting tournament – with…
