John Greenwood 1945-2015
CHEVROLET CORVETTE racing legend John Greenwood died on 7 July, aged 71. The son of a General Motors executive, the Michigan-born engineer/driver became inextricably linked with the model following appearances in endurance events such as the Le Mans 24 Hours. He did much to maintain the Corvette’s relevance in high-profile international races, despite little in the way of factory assistance. If anything, GM did much to distance itself from Greenwood’s motor sport bids. Greenwood began his career competing in illicit drag racing in 1960. He graduated to his first Corvette while still in his teens, and that was in turn replaced with a new big-block Stingray in 1968 in which he began competing in autocross events.
