The Holden six-cylinder as most recognize it began life in 1963, as the then-new ‘red’ series motor — a totally new design over the outgoing ‘grey’ series, most notably with a seven main-cap bottom end over the grey motor’s four. This iteration of the Holden six lasted through to 1986, undergoing various improvements (and colour changes) during this period, including a 12-port head design and bottom end revisions in the ‘blue’ series, and the development of EFI for the VK Commodore’s ‘black’ series. While the Holden six has a reputation for simplicity and reliability, its real claim to fame came via its most revered iteration in the Holden LJ Torana GTR XU-1 — the fire-breathing, triple-carbed 202 that Peter Brock piloted to a Bathurst victory against Ford’s seemingly unstoppable XY…
