There’s no replacement for displacement, and Ford certainly maintained that old adage when developing the Barra straight-six in the early 2000s. The BA Falcon series introduced the Barra as a further developed version of Ford’s single overhead cam (SOHC) straight six, with a double cam head and variable cam timing. It wasn’t the regular Barra that grabbed the public’s imagination, though, but the boosted version found in the Falcon XR6 Turbo. With an 8.7:1 compression ratio and intercooled Garrett GT3540 turbo, its stock 320hp was impressive, and it was a poorly kept secret that the tune had been kept mild so as not to outshine the Boss V8.
